We came in from the cold for a drink and a casual meal at Myth and Moonshine. The dark and cozy gathering spot in Baltimore’s Canton neighborhood was quiet on this frosty Thursday night. We had our choice of tables, though most of the seats at the bar were taken. We choose a table in a front window after considering a spot by the fireplace in the back room.
As we settled in, we knew we had chosen the right spot. It wasn’t only the hooch that took the chill off. The waitress made us feel at home, asked if we were sure we didn’t want a table by the fire, made suggestions for food and drink and did all she could to ensure we enjoyed the evening.
I admit it, I came for the moonshine-based cocktails. And what a colorful sight they were. My white Manhattan was a powerful quaff while the fruitier Pop and the Giant Peach and Blackberry on Acid went down more sweetly. M&M has a long list of moonshines on its shelf, from white lightning to ‘shines flavored with blackberry, vanilla and lemonade. Prefer a different poison? They have a fully-stocked bar and plenty of beer.
The three of us settled in, perused the drink menu first and then considered the Cajun-inspired entrees as a musician was setting up for a set of feel-good tunes later in the evening. The menu is casual with a good selection of sandwiches and salads, a couple of southern-style entrees (jambalaya, chicken and waffles). This is Baltimore, hon, so you know you’re going to find a crabcake — and a crabby grilled cheese, too. Everything we ordered was fresh, hearty and good. There were nice little touches, too. A salad I ordered arrived with a sprinkling of reddish micro-amarath. (Nice touch for bar food, don’t you think?)
For dessert, beignets. Warm and white with powdered sugar, they put me in a Vieux Carre state of mind. All too soon, our evening was coming to an end. We didn’t want to go back into the cold but we had been fortified by good food, good drink and good company. And hopes that we would be able to come back soon.
