Welcome to Mountain State Brewing in Deep Creek Lake. I get the feeling they want you to stay for a while.
On the other side of the mountain from Wisp Ski Resort, actually between two ski runs, this rustic old barn of a brew pub has become a part of the landscape.
With Adirondack chairs out back keeping an eye on the slopes, and games piled high waiting for someone to play with them Mountain State Brewing Company welcomes outdoors lovers inside for a beer, a flatbread pizza and a chance to wind down and enjoy themselves.
Now these brews aren’t created here on site. They are brewed in nearby Thomas, West Virginia. And it’s hard to pick a favorite. Maybe it’s the seasonal Rumsey Rock porter that appeared while we were there earlier this month. Or the Miner’s Daughter Oatmeal Stout with its deep color and almost chocolate flavor. The Cold Trail Ale? Or the Seneca Indian Pale Ale?
But thank goodness, they offer a sampler so you can try ’em all before committing to a whole pint or even a growler to take back to your cabin in the woods or on the lake.
I have to tell you I like the pizza here that goes so well with the beer. Baked in a wood-fired oven, it has a smoky flavor that goes so well with that pint.
Sure you can get a Margherita or classic cheese. But you can also get one topped with goat cheese from nearby Fire Fly Farms in Accident, or pesto and prosciutto, buffalo chicken or a big fat Greek.
I have a hard enough time choosing a beer to drink. Deciding on a pizza is even harder. What? Don’t want pizza?! They’ve got wraps, salads, soups and snacks for you people.
Just as long as you sit down, pick out a game and look out over that beautiful mountain. Now enjoy yourselves.
